Locality

The apartment building ‘De Ontdekking’ is located in the Indonesian quarter. This quarter is an old neighbourhood, just east of downtown Amsterdam. In this colourful district you’ll find almost all the nationalities to be found in Amsterdam (about 66). It is part of the city district of Zeeburg and a link between the old heart of the town and the newer, modern islands of the port and IJburg

Wide diversity

The cultural diversity of the quarter is particularly apparent at the ‘Dappermarkt’, which was proclaimed as the best market in Holland. But, also the huge variety of restaurants, bistros, cinemas, museums and other cultural activities ensure that you are continually being surprised. We will gladly be your guide should you need help to get going.

‘Artis’ and the ‘Tropenmuseum’ (Tropical Museum)

Probably the most well-known attraction in the vicinity of ‘De Ondekking’ is the Artis Zoo. On your way to ‘Artis’, you pass the ‘Tropenmuseum’, the old Colonial Institution of 1926, where nowadays all kinds of exhibitions are held. In the greenery of the adjacent ‘Oosterpark’, you can find yourself a bench near the pond to sit down awhile and have a rest.
Just a little beyond ‘Artis’, behind a 300-year old gate you find the ‘Hortus Botanicus’, one of world’s oldest botanical gardens and very worthwhile visiting.

(Public) transport

The tram stops right at your front door and offers a direct and rapid connection to the centre of Amsterdam. From there all Amsterdam tram-, bus-, train- and subway stations are easily reached. The railway station of ‘Muiderpoort’ is within walking distance of the apartment.
